Have you ever been fired? Do you bounce from job to job? Have you considered some of the reasons why you haven't been able to nail down one solid job? The workplace of today is a very complex environment. Here are a few things you may want to try and avoid if you want to keep your job or at least have good references for when you go to your next job.
Reliability:
Do you have a problem with showing up to work on time? Have you ever said you would do something, and then forgot to do it or just were too lazy to do it? Being reliable is a very important aspect managers look for in their employees. If a certain number of people are supposed to show up for the job, then it is important that everybody shows up or else the work has to be balanced between the reliable employees that did show up. These reliable employees won't be too happy if you cannot be trusted to show up or finish a job correctly. You will also not be your manager's first pick for special projects or opportunities.
Ego:
Just because you think you are the only one that can do a certain job doesn't mean you should be snobby and look down on everybody else. You are not irreplaceable. Chances are eventually the company may let you go and find a replacement for your position if the other employees complain about you all the time. Granted, sometimes it may take awhile to find a replacement, but there is always somebody out there with the skills to do your job. You are human just like everybody else and you can, and will, be replaced if you are disrupting the workplace.
Mistakes:
Everybody makes mistakes. If you made a mistake you better fess up to it or else it may catch up to you down the road. You are human just like everybody else and sometimes you may be overloaded with work or low on time and a things may get overlooked. Instead of trying to cover up a mistake do everything in your power to fix it. If you can't fix it, then get somebody's help who can help you fix it. Above all make sure you don't lie about the mistake and don't pawn it off as if it's somebody else's fault.
Insubordination:
Do you have problems taking directions from your manager? Are you constantly trying to outperform your manager or trying to correct what they do or say? Do you ever lash out or yell at your manager just because you are having a bad day? Make sure that you are doing everything you can ethnically do in your job to get the job done right. If a manager is trying to get you to do something that is unethnical, then go up the chain to your manager's boss.
If you strike out against your manger you are probably going to lose the battle and possibly get fired at the same time. Don't pick fights you can't win and if the situation is too bad try to get help from somebody else. Make sure to keep personal issues at home and don't bring them to work. If you are mad because of something that is not work-related and you do something you will regret at work, then it will haunt you for a long time. You won't get good reviews when you try to get another job and new employers will be leary of hiring you.
Dress Code / Personal Hygiene:
It is your responsibility to adhere to your company's policies for dress and personal hygiene. If you are working, then you are old enough to take care of yourself and make sure you do not dress like a slob. If you have to wear a company uniform make sure you are wearing it with respect and dignity. Managers do not like slobs or employees who have no self respect.
Conclusion:
To be able to hold down a job you have to make sure you are trying your best to get the job done. Don't be a lazy slacker that dresses poorly. Lazy employees that have to work in a group you are only bringing everybody else down and losing any respect they had for you. Try to help other employees when you can and always get to work on time. If for some reason you can't get to work make sure to let your manager know immediately. Don't make excuses and above all else don't lie to other employees or anybody else.
As long as you are trying your best to get the job done right, then you should be fine. If you need help make sure to ask for it. Don't mess something up just because your pride gets in the way and you don't want to ask somebody else for help. Every employee in a company is part of the team, so learn as much as you can from those who are more experienced and strive to do your best.
